The Role
This post is the deputy legal adviser to the Joint Committee on Human Rights, working alongside Counsel to the Committee to provide specialist legal advice on human rights law and practice, including scrutinising Bills, draft Bills and other policy proposals for their compatibility with human rights, and advising on the legal implications of case law relating to human rights. The post-holder also plays an active role in advising on proposals for thematic inquiries and contributing to the management of such inquiries (including analysing evidence submitted to such inquiries and drafting briefs and reports). The post-holder also contributes to the provision of advice to other Committees on human rights and international law.
The Person
The successful candidate will have the following skills/experience:
- Substantial post-qualification experience of practice as a barrister or solicitor or an equivalent role.
- Specialist knowledge of domestic and international human rights law and treaty processes.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to provide clear and concise legal advice on complex issues in a comprehensible and appropriate format.
- Experience of advising people in senior positions and gaining and keeping their confidence.
