The Role

The Communications Office is driving forward a programme of work to better align communications resource across the House of Commons behind the organisation’s strategic priorities.  The Head of Internal communications will work with colleagues across the House to help deliver this programme of work.

As well as having direct line management responsibility for the Internal Communications team, the Head of Internal Communications will be responsible for the management of numerous internal communications channels – including Town Hall events and other corporate ‘moments’, all-staff emails, e-bulletins, newsletters and the co-ordination of the internal communications network across the House of Commons. Responsibilities will also include delivering internal campaigns to engage Members of Parliament, their staff and House of Commons staff along with a supporting evaluation programme.

The successful applicant will report to the Deputy Director: Internal Communications, bringing creative ideas and a thorough understanding of internal communications best practice. The postholder will play a key role in ensuring that teams delivering internal communications and staff engagement across the organisation are working together effectively to support delivery of common communications objectives. These include work around implementing the recommendations of the Dame Laura Cox Report into the bullying and harassment of House of Commons staff and the Restoration and Renewal of the Palace of Westminster and related building projects (which are already impacting on staff).

The Person

The successful candidate will have the following skills/experience:

• Copywriting and verbal communication skills including an ability to translate complex information into compelling content.

• Experience of managing individuals and leading teams that work together to deliver high quality communications across a range channels.

• Expertise in overseeing the delivery of effective communications strategies and plans to multiple audiences –underpinned by robust evaluation programmes.

• Expertise in modern communications channels, digital media and internal communications best practice
