Background

The House of Lords plays an important role as the second chamber of the UK Parliament. It has approximately 800 members and is independent from, and complements, the work of the elected House of Commons. The Lords has three main roles: helping to make laws; investigating public policy, especially through its select committee work; and holding government to account through questions and debates. There are considerable challenges for the UK Parliament as a whole, and the Lords specifically, and the House is very much in the public eye.

The Communications Office is here to improve the public’s understanding of the role and membership of the House; show the impact of its work and its relevance to UK citizens; increase the range of opportunities for the public to engage with the Lords; and deliver the best possible communications to members and staff. Our staff are strictly impartial, supporting the work of the entire House and all its members.

The Role

The Internal Communications Officer plays a key role in the small but talented House of Lords Internal Communications team. The role includes managing a weekly newsletter, contributing copy to other publications, event organisation and delivering communications plans for high-profile member events.

The post-holder reports to the Head of Internal Communications and works closely with the Senior Internal Communications Officer as well as with colleagues from our public enquiry, press and media, events and outreach, and digital and marketing communications teams to achieve our strategic communication objectives.

The Person

The successful candidate will have the following skills/experience:

• Experience of working in a communications function, preferably internal communications
• Experience of writing high quality corporate communications for print and digital channels
• Experience of proofreading
• Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
• Excellent time management and organisational skills
