Design Manager (Architecture)

Do you have experience of managing the design process on large/complex construction programmes? Are you keen to work on diverse and interesting projects in a historic setting? Then make the move to the House of Commons Strategic Estates dynamic and growing Northern Estate Programme (NEP) team.

Our Strategic Estates team manages property and engineering infrastructures across a Parliamentary estate that consists of buildings that range from the historic Palace of Westminster to the modern Portcullis House. The Northern Estate Programme (NEP) has been established to manage the refurbishment of a number of significant buildings, some of which haven’t been refurbished for many years and are in varying states of repair. Accordingly, the programme promises to be fast-moving and very high profile. It will also have significant interdependencies with other major programmes on the parliamentary estate and carry some substantial risks that will need close management. Put simply, whoever joins us will need to make a quick impact on a project that’s currently working on a RIBA Stage 2.

This vital design management role will see you co-ordinate, integrate and control the activities of external design consultants, assist on pre-construction activities and tender opportunities and much more besides. As well as being the design lead for the NEP, you’ll get to contribute to the design management for other NE projects such as the Richmond House Project. Providing a two-month forecast of engagement required with stakeholders and liaising with Relationship Managers to ensure requests are coordinated will be important too. And, when it comes to working with other Design Managers to formulate best practice in design management techniques and reviews, again, we’ll count on you to deliver.

An Architect with ARB qualifications, you have sound business and negotiation skills and proven experience of delivering innovative, safe and cost effective solutions into the design for historic buildings. We'll also be looking for a good understanding of public procurement processes, including negotiation with third parties, successful contract management and risk management and excellent knowledge of value creation. Adept at delivering weekly and monthly reports across various stages of the programme/project lifecycle, you're also a stickler for ensuring the design process recognises current legislation, standards and codes of practice. What’s more, you’re a strong team player who is comfortable working collaboratively and having significant stakeholder engagement within a complex environment.
