Introduction

The Parliamentary Security Department (PSD) is responsible for physical and personnel security across both Houses of Parliament and provides support to Members and staff when away from the Estate. Its purpose is to keep Parliament safe and open for business.

PSD sets security strategy provides expert advice and delivers an operational service. It does this in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and by working closely with the In-House and Strategic Estates teams, Serjeant at Arms and Black Rod’s office, Restoration & Renewal teams, the Parliamentary Digital Service, and other key stakeholders. 

 

The Role

This post reports to the Duties and Tasking Supervisor who has responsibility for publishing the Duties, managing overtime and administrating the Time and Attendance Logging Systems (TALS). 

The main responsibilities of the post-holder are;

  • Managing postings, meeting staffing levels as set by PSD Operational Managers for Security Officers and the SOC. This is achieved by liaising with individuals regarding availability and deployment by email, telephone and in person on a regular basis.
  • Monitor and administer annual leave for officers. Set up leave accounts for new starters, calculate leave balance for officers leaving or changing working conditions. Provide monthly leave balances to all officers and managers to ensure officers don’t use more than entitlement.
  • Monitor Time Worked balances to ensure the ceiling is not breached and update as appropriate in line with local policy.
  • Deal with all queries which include sickness, maternity leave and annual leave. Also requests for additional staff due to the business of both Houses and events. Process incoming information and enquiries sensitively and professionally in line with House Values and employment policy.
  • Be conversant with Flexible Working Regulations and Working Time Directives and ensure published duties are fully compliant.

 

Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will have the following skills/experience:

  • Ability to make impartial decisions relating to employees, ensuring the policies are applied consistently and fairly across a large operational workforce.
  • Ability to build good relationships and co-operate with others, removing barriers to promote effective working relationships and uphold principles of equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Proven experience of attention to detail in reporting data and trends and ability to highlight and manage error reporting rates
  • Proven strong organisational and time-management skills to deliver against agreed targets, effective prioritisation and the ability to meet tight deadlines in a busy and changing environment
  • Ability to use reasoned judgements, make clear and sound decisions, referring only to management when appropriate
