Background

The Senior Internal Communications Officer is a new role in the House of Lords Internal Communications team. It will be focused on colleagues who are not based at desks, primarily our hard-working catering and facilities teams. You will develop our communications plan for these teams, implement and evaluate it, before then running these communication activities as business as usual. This is an excellent opportunity for a talented internal communications professional to make a real impact in key House of Lords teams and to own the communications to these important areas.

The House of Lords plays an important role as the second chamber of the UK Parliament. It has approximately 800 members and is independent from, and complements, the work of the elected House of Commons. The Lords has three main roles: helping to make laws; investigating public policy, especially through its select committee work; and holding government to account through questions and debates. There are considerable challenges for the UK Parliament as a whole, and the Lords specifically, and the House is very much in the public eye.

The Internal Communications team’s goal is to deliver the best possible communications to staff and members. We sit within the Communications Office, which is here to improve the public’s understanding of the role and membership of the House; show the impact of its work and its relevance to UK citizens; and increase the range of opportunities for the public to engage with the Lords. Our staff are strictly impartial, supporting the work of the entire House and all its members.

The post-holder reports to the Head of Internal Communications and will work closely with the other members of the Internal Communications team, colleagues from our public enquiry, press and media, events and outreach, and digital and marketing communications teams to achieve our strategic communication objectives. You will also work closely with colleagues in the Catering and Facilities teams, including their senior management teams.

Main Objective

The Senior Internal Communications Officer’s main activities are to:

  1. Create a communications plan for colleagues who are not based at desks, based on research with these teams. You will need to consider their challenges with current internal communications, what barriers they face to complete surveys or join in other activities and what they would like to read about in internal communications
  2. Implement and evaluate this plan, adapting it as necessary draft and publish internal communications for these teams, and to represent their voices within wider corporate communications and events

Why Join?

In addition to your salary, we offer an attractive range of benefits including:

  • 30 days’ annual leave (increasing to 35 days after first full leave year).
  • Civil Service Pension scheme.
  • Access to a range of flexible working options, where possible.
  • A suite of learning and development opportunities.
  • Interest free season ticket loan and bicycle loan.
